BRANDIN' TIME
In contemporary ranch life, gathering cattle from the range usually
takes place in the spring and the fall of each year. At the roundup
pens, the young calves are cut, or separated, from the rest of the
herd for the needed process of vaccination against disease, and for
branding. A brand is the unique mark, or signature, of the ranch put
on each calf for identification of ownership in the future out on
the range. The cowboy in this sculpture is displaying his special
skill of roping calves who have been cut out from the rest of the
herd, so they can be branded, and then released back with the other
cattle.
