FLOWERS FOR MY WAGONWIDOW During
the spring and fall, when it's time to gather, count, and brand cattle
at "BIG OUTFITS", the cowboys are sent out with the "wagon".
This is an old fashioned horse drawn, or a modern motorized chuck-wagon
that follows the hands from one section of the ranch to another as
they find and herd in all the cattle that must be counted and branded.
This goes on seven days a week until the job is done, which on large
ranches can run into months. An old term among cowboys is the"Wagon
Widow", because the wives of these cowboys don't see them for
very long periods of time. This particular bronze sculpture shows
a cowboy, who has stopped to pick a few wildflowers because the wagon
is gathering cattle not far from his line cabin, where his "Widow"
is, so he is going to ride over to see how she is getting along without
him. |
