REFLECTED SPLENDOR Warriors
always painted themselves with their own spiritual protective designs
when they went into battle, but not all body painting was done for
the purpose of war. Some tribes painted their faces for protection
against wind, sun, snow and insects. They also did is as a favorite
way of mental conditioning. The Sioux believed that by being painted
they had been changed or undergone a "new birth", and new
responsibilities, obligations and relationships would then be assumed.
The painting was done in a hidden place, away from others so that
the painted one would come forth pure, free of ignorance, and at one
with the Great Spirit. |
