Cowboys that can train young horses well have always been valued by ranches. Getting the young horse to respond quickly and easily to the gentle touch of the reins, a voice command or the slightest change in the weight of a stirrup, is greatly appreciated by ranch. This horse is being started out on a Snaffle bit to get his mouth ready for a more traditional working bit when his mouth toughens. Also, the cowboy is using a Running Martingale connected from the reins to the breast collar, which is to train the horse to keep his head tucked . As a boy, Bill watched his dad train many horses in this manner, and has always seen it as an art in its own right.
